Copying a Remote Device
There are several methods for copying a remote device, depending on your needs and the "depth" of the copy you want.
To Make a "Shallow" Copy
The following steps explain how to make a partially copied remote device from the existing Remote Devices. Both the source remote device and the resulting target remote device must be in the same Device Definition Service (DDS).
- Using CygNet Explorer, open the DDS.
- Right-click an existing remote device in the Remote Devices page.
- Click New. A partially configured ("shallow") copy of the existing remote device appears.
- Configure the unfilled properties for the remote device and click OK.
Depending on your specific needs, you might also need to add facility attributes, to add new points, and to rebuild your existing group hierarchy.
To Make a Single "Deep" Copy of a Remote Device
The following steps explain how to make a more completely copied remote device than in the procedure above. Both the source remote device and the resulting target remote device must be in the same Device Definition Service (DDS).
- Using CygNet Explorer, open the DDS.
- Right-click an existing remote device in the Remote Devices page.
- Click Copy. A Copy Device dialog box appears.
- Compare and confirm the new remote device property values are the same as the current remote device property values.
- Double-click the Device ID row to name your new remote device.
- Double-click on any other Old value or New value to edit the New value.
- If you need to map new facilities, highlight it and click Choose facility to change its value. Data groups and UIS commands for any unmapped facilities are not carried forward. See Data Group Ordinals and Facility Ordinals for more information.
- When you are finished, click Commit changes to exit the Copy Device dialog box and open the new remote device in the DDS to make any remaining configurations, or click Edit new device to open the newly copied remote device immediately to make any remaining configurations.
Depending on your specific needs, you might also need to add facility attributes, to add new points, and to rebuild your existing group hierarchy.
To Make Multiple "Deep" Copies of a Remote Device
You can make multiple "deep" copies of a single remote device simultaneously. Both the source remote device and the resulting target remote devices must be in the same Device Definition Service (DDS). For more information, see Device Copy Utility.
To Import/Export Remote Device Settings in an XML File
Another option for copying devices is to use the DDS import/export capabilities. This is especially useful for copying a device configuration from one DDS to another. Additionally, exported device configuration XML files can be stored in separate folders as backup records of current device configurations. For more information, see Exporting and Importing Devices.
